Species Interactions and Comparative Immunology (SPICI)

We work on non-model invertebrates (worms) collected in Natura. Worms occupy a large range of habitats (terrestrial, marine…) including very extreme ones (highly polluted estuaries, hydrothermal vents, polar, abyssal…) and show impressive capacities of body regeneration. As a probable consequence, they constitute a source of a large variety of atypical and multifunctional AMPs. Concretely, our group isolates /identifies new AMPs in worms, studies their multifunctions (antibacterial, neurotrophic, regenerative, symbiostasis, transgenerational transfer of immunity…) and uses them as markers to follow the immune adaptation and acclimation to changing abiotic and biotic conditions.

Our actual and recent questions are: What is the nature of the AMPs produced by animals able to thrive in harsh conditions? What are the patterns of selection and expression of AMP genes in metazoans exposed to abiotic and biotic environmental pressures? Do and how AMPs participate in controlling and shaping the establishment of detoxifying microbial symbiosis that are vital to face extreme conditions? Does and how the mother use the selected AMPs to transmit her environmental experience to her offspring?
